Fall is Not Far
We put in down by the sea and head up into the Neck, my usual route at high tide, which has just passed an hour or so ago. The smallest amount of ebb current is against us, but it is nothing to notice unless one stops paddling. It is a very calm day as far as birds go. The willets are few and the ones that we spot are inactive, plopped down on the ground as if they have not risen from their night beds. We find a greater yellow legs and two lesser yellow legs before reaching the first bend. Even the osprey are still with few in the air and not for long when they do fly. But, almost every one that flies has a fish in the talons, so they may have all had a successful morning hunt before we arrived.

We pause on the upstream side of the stone arch bridge letting the stronger ebb current push us against the foundation while we take a break. Then, we paddle on watching the spartina dissipate and and the cattails increase as we leave the brackish waters. I collect a marsh wren nest from the phragmites. Their nesting is well over, their young are fledged, and if they are anywhere around they are certainly not showing themselves.

We spot a pair of kingfishers at the gravel flats (which are nowhere to be seen due to the water depth). We also spot a green heron. I spot green herons quite often here where the open marsh river meets the forest river. We end up spotting several and get close enough for a good view with the binoculars.

Where is the world is that
We've been trying to mark all of our stops on Google Maps. It sounds like it's working, so here's a link (it's also over on the left hand side of the blog under "Our fav links"). If you zoom all the way in on an "anchor" you can even see the marinas. We've started using Google Maps as a part of our route planning (and to get a tentative idea of the marina location and layout).

The Searay 370 Venture What you dont see is good

The Searay 370 Venture by design looks like a traditional express cruiser, but forward of the swim platform, and under the two aft facing padded seats are 300 hp Verado outboards.

The Searay design team I think made a superior, and clever decision in using the Verado. Fewer holes in the boat, much easier to maintain, less components exposed to salt water corrosion, and did I mention it's quiet? Very very quiet. Excellent job Searay, I won't miss single of those things "you don't see on this boat."
I'm tired of hose clamp cuts and ripped clothes. The spider monkeys are also eating me out of house and home, and riding the greyhounds.
Thanks to Marine Max Sarasota for letting me take pictures of the boat.
The first photo is from the Searay image library, the balance were taken by the Installer.

The Easter Goose is in the House
It has been windy for several days and I am anxious to be back in my canoe. I start my portage to the big lake, think better of the wind, decide to head to the south lagoon, and decide to put in on the big lake after all. A good wind is blowing from the SSE, and while there are waves, I don't feel much of the wind once I'm on the water, but I can hear it singing in the trees. Once I leave the shallow cove where I put in, the waves grow to be one to two feet high. I stay within 100 yards of shore and while the wave echo from the fortified beach walls makes the paddling more difficult, the risk of a swim from here, in cold water, is more palatable. The bay is relatively calm and I head first to the big lodge to check on the goose nest.
They have finally settled on a good protected spot high on the south side of the beaver lodge and the female is working some down into the structure as I approach. This spot will take in the warmth of the sun while the brush overhead and on either side will provide some shelter. The missing male comes honking from behind my shoulder as two geese fly into the area. He tags one on the butt in mid-flight and resumes his watch on me. OH! the female has just got up - she has eggs already - and she moves them around a bit and sits back down.I head over to the railroad islands to check for nests, but find none and instead tow a drifting buoy out of the marsh and over to my preferred illegal dump site where it will be easily and properly disposed of. The west beaver lodge nest looks fine, although I can't see eggs and while I am there, a large otter swims by. It's quite likely the same that I have been seeing over the past couple weeks.

Paper Jet 001 is for sale!
This was the first such boat ever cut, CKD Boats cc cut it!
Now for sale at only U$8000. Contact Dudley direct on dudley@dixdesign.com
I designed the Paper Jet to be an exciting junior trainer, capable of taking a young sailor through multiple skill-levels, from a basic free-standing una-rigged dinghy through to a high-performance trapeze skiff with asymmetric spinnaker. This it does without having to spend bundles of money to trade up to another boat, by doing it all on the same hull and adding or swapping rig and hardware components. She is extremely light, with the hull weighing only 94lb, easily manhandled by small crew.

Google Earth is watching you
Seen yesterday and in the Alphen to Constantia areas.
Click on the picture to enlarge it.
This is not too bad a picture when we consider the camera is my now old Canon G11 which has the well known fault of scratches on the lens, yes a bad design fault for sure. I went to telephoto as the Honda CRV was moving away from me, the windscreen of my Ford LDV seems not to be there?
I think the gear was active as a spinning wheel could be seen on the top of the rig.
Big Brother or was it Little Sister?
Roy
Note, if your home, car or person is found on Google Earth and you have an objection, you can request them to degrade the image, you can also ask them to correct a position based on a postal code if the building indicated is to be seen out of position. I have done this myself and later found the marker was placed in the correct position.
